GTL – Hospital Indemnity

What hospital indemnity insurance is

Hospital indemnity insurance pays you a fixed cash benefit when you are admitted to the hospital. The money goes to you, not to the hospital, so you can use it for whatever you need: a deductible or copay, or the costs health insurance does not cover, such as travel, meals or help at home while you recover.

How it fits with your other coverage

It does not replace health insurance. It works alongside it, including alongside Medicare. What it pays, when benefits begin and what counts as a covered stay depend on the policy and the state.

Who it can help

  • People with a high deductible or high out-of-pocket costs.
  • People on a plan with a $0 premium, who want cash set aside for a hospital stay.
  • Anyone for whom an unexpected bill would be hard to absorb.

Hospital Recovery Insurance is a similar kind of cash-benefit coverage. You can read about it on our Hospital Recovery Insurance page.
